The Austin Blacks entered last weekend's final Gold Cup matches with a lead and in the end with two wins over the Kansas City Blues and Metropolis the Blacks won the competition. The Gold Cup, which pits the two top teams from the Midwest and Red River from the previous season against each other, was designed to give top teams in the middle of the country more high level games. When all is said and done the Blacks, Blues, Metropolis, and Dallas Reds will all have had four extra matches that they wouldn't have had playing in their respective divisions.

For the Blacks it started on Saturday with a 38-14 win over Metropolis. They team got contributions from several players, including tries from Matt Radzavich (twice), Sam Rooke (twice), Tim Howard, and Stephen Jones. With that win the Blacks clinched the title with a match to spare. The Blacks then closed out their tournament with a 40-24 win over the Kansas City Blues. Once again it was Rooke doing much of the scoring finishing with a hat-trick. Jones had two tries of his own.

BOULDER, Colo. – The Kansas City Blues and Metropolis will make a visit to the Southwest to compete in the third and fourth rounds of the Rugby Gold Cup against the Austin Blacks and Dallas Reds March 11 and 13.

Following November fixtures in Kansas City, Mo., that saw the Blacks triumph in each of their outings while the Reds settled for a split, the Midwest sides are looking to move up in the Gold Cup Standings following the doubleheaders this weekend in Fort Worth, Texas.

Knocking off the best the Red River Conference has to offer will not be an easy task, though. Austin and Dallas find themselves in the middle of their competitive seasons and playing at a high level. As for the Blues and Metropolis, neither team has had a competitive match since duking it out against the Texas teams back in November.

The Austin Blacks were the only team to sweep through their two Gold Cup matches thanks to a tight win over the Kansas City Blues. The Kansas City Blues also registered their first win in the competition with a result over Dallas. The competition now takes a break until the spring when the teams move their matches to the Red River. Over 350 fans bought tickets to come out to the matches, making it one of the premier events in the middle of the country this year.

There was a lot to like in the Austin-Metropolis match as both teams played great attacking rugby. Metropolis were on the board first after several long phases saw fullback Joel Yogerst cross over. Jojo Tikoisuva converted the try to give Metropolis a 7-0 lead. Austin responded soon after with a penalty from Diego Sotelo to cut the deficit to 7-3. Metropolis then took a 14-3 lead when Tikoisuva scored.

That's when Austin made a run. Fly-half Hamish Roberts was the first to score for Austin and he was soon followed by Chris Baumann. Sotelo made one of the two conversions to give Austin a 15-14 lead. That wouldn't last into halftime however, as Kavika Peniata scored just before halftime to put Metropolis in front 19-15.

It was a solid day for the Red River yesterday in the first round of the Gold Cup as both Dallas and Austin picked up wins over their Midwest counterparts. Both matches yesterday saw great rugby that challenged individual teams and players, exactly what the competition was designed to do.

In the first match Dallas barely edged Metropolis 25-24. With only 13 minutes to go Dallas trailed 24-15 but were able to score a late try from Number 8 Dales Russ and a conversion and late penalty from Zack Klump for the comeback win.

Klump put the Reds up first with a penalty just a couple of minutes in before Metropolis peeled off a couple of tries to take a 12-3 lead. The Reds would then score a couple tries of their own through prop Chris Hopkins and flanker Collin Yerian to take a temporary halftime lead at 15-13. In the second half Metropolis scored two tries but were only able to convert one before the Reds mounted their comeback. Metropolis actually scored more tries than the Reds but it was Klump's kicking that was the difference.
